Friends,

As we enjoy the warmth of summer, I’m excited to share some significant updates from Williamsburg this past month of July. Let’s take a look at what’s been happening in our vibrant city!

  • Legislative Update: The City Attorney’s Office has prepared a Legislative Update to brief the Council on recent legislation passed by the General Assembly that impacts our city. This overview highlights items of interest and bills that may require further action from the Council. Checkout the link for a slide deck on each new law of importance.
  • Excellence in Service Award: We are thrilled to announce that Athena Peters has received the Excellence in Service Award, nominated by her peers for her exceptional work in the Human Services Department. Known for her calm and caring approach, Athena serves as the first point of contact for nearly 4,400 walk-in customers and 23,000 phone callers annually. We extend our gratitude to Athena for her dedication and outstanding service to the City of Williamsburg.
  • Police Station Groundbreaking: We’ve broken ground on the new Williamsburg Police Station, designed by Henderson Inc. and Moseley Architects. This 43,400-square-foot facility at 715 Lafayette St. is set to open in the fall of 2025. This project represents a significant investment in the safety and security of our community.
  • Sports Center Groundbreaking: Last but certainly not least, we just celebrated the groundbreaking of the Williamsburg Sports and Events Center (pictured above). Featuring 12 basketball courts that can convert to 24 volleyball courts or 36 pickleball courts, along with a climbing wall and gym facilities, this center is set to become a premier destination for sports tourism and community recreation. Opening in 2026 near the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center, it will be open to the community during the week and host tournaments on weekends, boosting local tourism and engagement.

Thank you for your continued support and participation in our wonderful community. Let’s enjoy the rest of summer and look forward to these exciting developments that will enhance the quality of life in Williamsburg!

Yours in service,

Caleb
